Defining Success In A Changing World
When any of us think about success, we often come up with different ideas or definitions of what success means to us including what success actually looks like. These thoughts and images that come into our minds when we hear the word, ‘success’ is sometimes as a result of how we were brought up from childhood, family values, the influence of peers, the influence of the various forms of media, books, movies, music, celebrities, religion and people we look up to. It’s safe to say that success means different things to different people and does not always equate to material things like money, big houses, being famous, nice cars, a bunch of degrees among other things. The word ‘success’ has its roots in Latin and usually meant wealthy, resulting in financial prosperity according to etymonline.com unless otherwise stated. Success also means a good result, a happy outcome and other related things.
What Does Success Mean To You?
When you think of success, do you think of yourself? Would you consider yourself to be successful? If you set goals, intentions, aims or objectives for things that you want to get done like places you want to visit, tasks you want to complete and people you want to meet and you manage to accomplish those things then, by definition, you are successful. That is the simplest way of explaining success in my opinion but I believe that there are levels to success and this is based on how big/small the goals we set are, what we need to do in order to accomplish them and the outcome that will be created once we do. Success is intentional but can sometimes be unintentional but either way, it often requires us to do something in order to get a desired outcome. Anne Sweeny believes that you should define success on your own terms and I’ll add, don’t let the world tell you whether or not you are successful because only you can decide that for yourself.
Quotes About Success
There are so many amazing quotes about success which you can find all over the internet with a simple Google search but I have chosen a few to share with you which I hope will help you to see success differently. I love this one from Robert Collier who said, “Success is the sum of small efforts – repeated day in and day out” which makes sense when you really think about it. Booker T. Washington shared that, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life as by the obstacles which he has overcome.” Put it this way, your success should not necessarily be measured by your current position in life but by the many challenges you overcame. You can overcome challenges daily! Here’s a quote for the road from Zig Ziglar, “The foundation stones for a balanced success are honesty, character, integrity, faith, love and loyalty.”
